Summary

This chapter gave a brief description of the LDAP Data Interchange Format, LDIF, which is the sort of data manipulated by the iPlanet/SunONE front-ends.

We described the key configuration files of an LDAP server, and pointed out the importance of the configuration directory, which holds information for the administrative server. This information is accessed and/or modified using the administrative console.

The last section identified the most popular tools for manipulating the LDAP database.

We will discuss the usage of these tools and the LDIF format in detail in the next chapters.
